May 10, 2018 - Jane Street

We recently attended an information session with Jane Street on their on-campus recruitment plans for 2018-19. Jane Street is a quantitative proprietary trading firm with offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong.

Who Should Apply
Internships are open to students at any degree level — undergrads, masters and PhDs. Successful interns have strong quantitative and technical skills, and are excellent communicators.

They look for applicants that are “good at playing games” and enjoy solving challenging problems.  Collaboration, transparency and teamwork are among the core attributes required for success at Jane Street.

“Successful candidates tend to really enjoy the problems and challenges we incorporate in the interview process”

Application Process
Jane Street plans to open this year’s internship applications by late August. They do not stick to a traditional fall hiring timeline, and applications for summer 2019 internships will likely close between February and April 2019.

Interview Insights
Jane Street’s interview process is meant to be challenging and to test candidates on their quantitative analysis skills and critical thinking abilities. The hiring process typically consists of 1-3 phone interviews, followed by an in-person interview on-site.

Interview Preparation
The team at Jane Street recommend applicants review the following materials in advance of applying and/or interviewing:

Company Culture
Jane Street is a collaborative work place with a self-described culture combining a start-up mentality with a rigorous academic environment. Successful employees enjoy research, debate, and solving tough problems.

Summer Opportunities
Each summer, Jane Street offers 10-12 week summer internship opportunities for students at any degree level, in any field of study. Internships span one of four areas:

  • Trading
  • Research
  • Software Development
  • Business Development

Internships with Jane Street follow a “learn by doing” model, and include supplementary educational programming, such as mock trading exercises and a summer speaker series. The majority of full-time offers at Jane Street are made to interns upon completion of their internship.
